Traveling with Kids

There are so many things we can't do while traveling with our kids, that we could have if we'd done this before they were born: more states, kayaking rivers, rock climbing, horse back riding, mountain biking, snowboarding, and hiking big mountains. Our max drive time between locations is 8 hours and our max hiking distance is 2 miles. We can't even hire a babysitter to go adventure on our own once in a while.

As fun and exciting as it would have been to travel before kids, I'm so glad we didn't wait to have a family so we could do a bunch of fun things and then act like life is over once we had a baby. In fact, I feel like our fun didn't really begin until we had kids. Rather than letting it slow us down, it inspired us to do more.

It's true that even simple tasks like making dinner or taking a shower are much more complicated with little ones, let alone getting out of the house. But don't be afraid to try hiking, traveling, or even camping with kids. Sometimes it is a disaster. But sometimes it isn't. Sometimes you're scrubbing puke out of your backseat, or driving around at 2 AM praying your baby will go back to sleep. But sometimes you get to share the most beautiful moments with your family while sleeping under the stars or wandering through a forest that you wouldn't have been able to experience at home. Kids won't remember their favorite day of watching TV, but they will remember that time you took a family trip or spent the day at the lake.
