Melon Head

I have been waiting for this moment since I was 8 years old, and it's finally come.

I remember the first time my Grandma asked me if I wanted some watermelon. "It's red... I like red... it looks juicy... I like juicy.... it smells great... everyone else loves it, why wouldn't I? Of course I'll try some watermelon!" I've never felt so betrayed by a piece of fruit in my life. So beautiful and intriguing, yet it tasted like dirty sour river water. Deceiving little melon.

The worst part is, Watermelon has tricked me every summer since then too. I always think that maybe it has changed. Maybe things will be different this time. I just can't resist that red juiciness, but then I quickly remember the pain and sorrow it has put me through.

Well this summer is different. I was at the grocery store and saw that big old watermelon sitting comfortably on the shelf, looking pleased as can be with itself. "Oh hey melon head, you're looking pretty good today. Want to come home with me? What's that?
You always trick me with your sly ways and every summer I end up hating you? Well not this time fatso. See there's something you don't know. I'm 24 now.
My taste buds have matured, and so have I. I'm not going to let you get to me this time. In the past year I've learned to like asparagus, green beans, and your good little friend cantaloupe. And now I'm going to like you. You will never deceive me again."

We ate the whole thing, and I enjoyed every bite of it.

Haha, that's really awesome!!

I used to hate watermelon too, but I guess you just need to get the right ones sometimes.

For me, something I haven't eaten in over 10 years is KIWI. I had terrible experiences with it when I was younger and gave up on it forever, haha!

Lol they are deceptive fruits. I always think they're going to be much sweeter, or something. Maybe I think the texture is going to be different. I don't know. I still like them, but they are tricky.

Woohoo! Glad you liked it! It's one of my favorite fruits. Fruit can be tricky though, if you get a bad one. I was scarred for life with a bad papaya in Rwanda! xoxo

i LOVE watermelon, always have! Now you are an adult, you can cut the top off, scoop out the insides, fill it with a cocktail and stick lots of straws in it :)

I love to salt my watermelon!

It was definitely an acquired taste for me too. It was one of those foods I just wanted to like SO badly that I kept eating it and kept eating it until I did.

Glad you finally enjoyed one! :)

haha! I've never heard of people hating watermelon and talking about how it tastes like water before this summer. I heard it from multiple people. I honestly had never thought of that. Mmm all of those things your listed sound so yummy.

Watermelon is THE BEST. I like it most in a fruit salad with other fruits like berries. I'm not much of a "melon" gal so watermelon is so much different than the others that I love it.
